...When asking someone to dance, did a gentlemen say "May I have this dance?" "May I stand up with you for this dance?" or something similar interchangeably.
In a book I'm reading called Merry Hearts Make Light Days by John Le Couteur John asked a young lady to dance by saying,"Miss, Please may I have the gratification of placing you in the dance?" He had engaged her as his partner before the dance.
