Standing up to dance

Knowing that I've read it somewhere in Austen, and here on the boards about standing up with someone to dance; I was wondering two things:
1) Did I imagine it? (I can't find the reference in Austen but maybe I haven't got the hang of the search thingy)
2) When asking someone to dance, did a gentlemen say "May I have this dance?" "May I stand up with you for this dance?" or something similar interchangeably.
(Yes, I'm writing a fic (Lois & Clark this time) and one of my editors queried me on this usage!)
