To L and T indexThe anvil is considered a sacred artifact, over which contracts and marriages can be sanctified on certain holy days. St. Dunstin was the patron saint of blacksmiths who nailed the devil to a post. (Hence the rhyme: Father Son and Holy Ghost, nail the devil to a post.) This is a little earlier than our period though (Elizabethan Renaissance) but traditions certainly persevered.
