Mollimawk may be a version of Molly Mog --the heroine of a play of the time. Lesbianism was indeed not much understood. When the MP Labouchere undertook to explain to Queen vic the Bill proposed to change the law on homosexuality, which included provisions on lesbianism, she refused to believe that such things existed, so the Bill was changed and lesbianism was never penal in Britain, or so it is told.
