With regard to writing tools, Waterman did invent the fountain pen in the latter 19th C, however, the ball point or "steel writing pen" came into use much earlier--around 1819 I think. It was not, however, very popular due to problems with the ink, if memory serves. Do we have an expert in the audience with a better memory or better resources on this topic?
