Highly recommended! The most popular novels are the Aubrey/Maturin (sp?) ones--I haven't read those H. Hornblower ones Mark mentions, so I'll have to try them too.
The first novel, Master and Commander, is delightful--we see the development of The friendship between two seeming opposites, the hale and hardy Capt. Aubrey (not sure of his rank at this stage) and the dark mysterious Dr. Maturin, and of course, there's lots of exciting sea-faring.
The books are really exciting and often hilarious--my only caution is that one can easily get bogged down in the naval terminology. I admit I often end up doing a little skimming and skipping when HMS The Whatever is described for pages on end. But perhaps that sort of detail is exactly what you want!
