In response to Army Ranks, written by Captain Everett on March 27, 1998 at 21:35:51
] ] What would be the rank above that of a captain? I am not quiet acquainted with these military terms, so any help would be appreciated. This is part of research for a book that I am writing (regency period of course).
]
] I noticed that information on ranks in the Navy have already been posted on the Board. For those who are interested, here are the ranks in the Army, from the top to the bottom. Those above the line of astericks are Commissioned Officers. The Capitalized titles are broad terms which are commonly used, not a rank itself. Those preceded by three dashes are either unofficial ranks, or limited to certain units only. This list covers most of the ranks, but there are many less other less common designations:
] Field Marshal
] GENERAL OFFICERS
] GeneralHi, I was just browsing and thought I would see what you had. I've been in the Army for 15 years, so I'm familiar with the ranks! Keep up the good information!!!
] Lieutenant-General
] Major-General
] Brigadier-General] Colonel
] FIELD OFFICERS
] Lieutenant-Colonel
] Major] Captain
] SUBALTERNS
] Lieutenant
] Ensign (Coronet in Cavalry)] ******
] NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS
] Staff Sergeant
] Sergeant
] ---Lance Sergeant
] Corporal] ---Lance Corporal or Chosen Man
] Private (Trooper in Cavalry)
] Drummer (Bugler in Light Infantry, Trumpeter in Cavalry)] NOTE: Some Regiments, such as Fusilier, or Royal Artillery, had the ranks of 1st and 2nd Lieutenant. The Royal Artillery also had bombadiers (below Corporal), and beneath them, gunners. Royal Horse Artillery had Second-Captains, and Drivers. The Royal Engineers had a "sub-lieutenant" who was a retired NCO.
]
] Some positions were considered to be the eqivalent of the above ranks, as follows [NB- These are only guidelines] Note: this did not entitle the holder of the position to a military command:] Captain: Paymasters, Surgeon
] Lieutenant: Assistant Surgeon
] Ensign/Coronet: Hospital Assistants, Veternary Surgeon (rising to Lieutenat after 10 yrs service, to Captain after 20 yrs
] Staff Sergeants: Colour Sergeant, Quarter Master Sergeants] Adjutants were usually Subalterns
