Davidia -- that's pretty much what a "writing desk" was (I have a description near the bottom of http://www.pemberley.com/janeinfo/jealmcds.html) -- though it wouldn't have been quite so portable as to be used conveniently used in the cramped interior of a carriage; remember that Catherine Morland "had some difficulty in saving her own new writing-desk from being thrown out into the street").
