I've never read any of his books, but they have a HUGE following among both womenn and men. His heroes are (I think) sailors during the relevant time period and O'Brian is considered a masterful authority on the subject. There may be web page devoted to him. There are America Online discussion groups.

Also, I went on a whaling ship at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut and women did commonly accompany their husbands, and even bear and rear children on board. These ships were often gone for years, so it was the only way to keep the family together. Conditions were ghastly by modern standards, although the captain's quarters ere luxurious compared to the seamen's.
