What I do know comes from a local couple who play late 18th and early 19th century instruments and songs; they have done a lot of research to discover what was being played in this town in that time. When I talked to them as they were setting up for a show, they said that ladies would most often play a keyboard or a harp, less often they would play a "Spanish guitar" which looks like a smaller version of the modern acoustic guitar, or an "English guitar," which looks rather like a lute, but with fewer strings. I believe I read somewhere about George Washington's stepdaughter asking him for a guitar and someone to teach her. Most of the music books we have [I work at an archives] are scored for a keyboard, but could be easily converted to another instrument.
