Sorry, for doing this again!!! about leaving ones card:

visits are sometimes conducted without prior notice and thus the person may be ushered into the proper room with due civility, but unable to meet the person. Thus leaving ones card denotes the visit.

I hate to bring this up but I remember accompanying my parents on announced visits to homes of family friends, if the house was without any person/empty my father would leave his card(with a few words) in an appropriate place.
This practice has/will probably not exist in this generation where calling ahead is desired also establishments have changed. We must remember a number of elaborate customs require support systems(read servants) thus they will dissapear. But, in poorer countries labour is available and cheap.
