It should be said however that the courage and devotion of the wives, particularly in the Peninsula, deserve the highest praise. They usually acted as laundresses and nurses. If you have read Bleak House, Mrs Bagnet can stand for many of them. Ther is also the extraordinary story of Juanita Smith, a young Spanish who was rescued by Captain Harry Smith from the pillage of Badajoz, married him on the spot and went all over the world with him. Ladysmith in South Africa, the site of a famous siege in the Boer War was named after her.
