The TV productions are anachronistic. Unmarried womwn did not cobver their hair, though once you had decided that you would not marry, you might adopt a cap. Married women wore caps or hats indoor and out except on formal social occasions when jewellrery might substitute, widows wore caps with long streamers which gradually got more attenuated, it being a nice judgment as to how quickly you could reduce the severity of your mourning and the length of your weepers to indicate your return to society.
