What is a polecat?

I know (from Monty Python of all things) that it's supposed to be a stinky animal.
When I looked it up in the dictionary the first definition was "European carnivorous mammal of which the ferret is considered a domestic variety" and the second definition was "skunk" - Does the polecat do a similar spraying thing or is it "something completely different"? ; )
