In response to Which begs the question....., written by Marie B on April 22, 1998 at 07:22:32

To L and T indexI go to Montana every summer, and every year I notice that although the locals have a distinct accent, or maybe tempo is a better way to describe, the news broadcasters all talk like yankees. Or maybe not like "yankees" (I'm not really sure how a yankee would talk), but in what I percieve to be "no accent." I'm from Connecticut, close to NYC, but not close enough to tawk like ah Ne Yawkah. I do talk fast though, according to my parents ("kidspeech," they call it. My question is, do they teach broadcasters to talk in a certain way? Who decides which accent is "right?" Do they have to import people to teach it? Hmmm... seems like a lot of trouble for something pretty inconsequential.
