I think duets existed before Jane Austen's time. I remember seeing a picture of Mozart and his sister at the piano. Nannerl had "big hair" and an impossibly placed ribbon. However, Mozart was a professional.
In England, sisters or friends may have played duets, or probably the student and her governess. It may have been later (during the romantic era) when people saw other possibilities for duets.
Thanks to all who responded.
