I think duets existed before Jane Austen's time. I remember seeing a picture of Mozart and his sister at the piano. Nannerl had "big hair" and an impossibly placed ribbon. However, Mozart was a professional. In England, sisters or friends may have played duets, or probably the student and her governess. It may have been later (during the romantic era) when people saw other possibilities for duets.
