] The code was a legal system that was really quite advanced, allowing women considerable legal rights, and permeates French Law even today.
What sorts of legal rights did the Napoleonic Code grant to women? As recently as five years ago, a woman in Louisiana (U.S. state with most of its laws rooted in Napoleonic Code) couldn't get her refrigerator repaired without her husband's signature.
Of course, in Louisiana, they blame Napoleonic code for everything! :-)
