] Portrait of "Dr. James Miranda Barry, cross-dressed to graduate from an Edinburgh medical school in 1812 and lived as a man until her death."
She not only cross-dressed, but she became a surgeon in the Army, rising to the post of the Chief Medical officer in Canada.Itwas only at her death that "they" discoverd she wasn't a man, apparently. I don't have much information on her apart from this..my info comes from a book of famous Canadians in an elementary school library.
And as a BTW, she trained in Edinburgh because..well, because 75%of all practicing doctors did so, and possibly because Scotland did not insist on university candidates taking the oath of allegiance to the 39 articles of the Anglican faith, so it was generally a more receptive environment.
