A stationery question
Posted by MB on April 20, 1998 at 17:30:52:
I've seen notes with envelopes, notes without, letters cross-written and folded, etc.
When did envelopes come into general/accepted use? Were they around and only used when personal finances permitted?
For instance, if I remember correctly, Darcy's famous letter to Elizabeth was encased in an envelope, but I've read that JA herself did not often use envelopes.
What gives?
Thanks!
Michele
