"Got" vs. "Gotten"

Sorry Caroline; this is a bit off-topic!
Coincidentally, Helen, in I Capture the Castle, Cassandra notes some of the "charming" differences between British English and American English. One of these is the American tendency to use "gotten" where British would use "got". So maybe it's a transcontinental problem?
