To L and T indexWell, my original point was that we shouldn't impose our contemporary concerns onto a book from an entirely different era, if only because of the violence it does to the writer's vision. Your point about her concern about injustice is well taken, Henry, but is, as you pointed out, specific to a situation rather than "global." A 20th century point of view would be more concerned about the rights of women, say, in general rather than the specific instances you mention. Jane is, after all, an artist, not a polemicist, and I think it's ultimately irrelevant to criticize her for something that she's not attempting to be or do.
