] ] As an Aussie now living and married in the U.S.] As an aussie, can you tell us how Australian english compares with US and British english? Which is it most similar to?
Definitely British English. We retain the same spellings (although American spellings are creeping in. We spell sulphur "sulfur" now, f'instance. Well, some Aussies do, anyway.) and we have the same basis in slang (mostly Cockney based). We'll just have to wait and see what happens when Australia becomes a Republic :)
