I'm curious - when Darcy calls on Elizabeth at Hunsford, he says the 50 miles from Kent to Hertfordshire is an easy distance, which Lizzie somewhat disagrees with. Does anyone know how long would it have taken to travel the 50 miles of good roads by coach, by post, on horseback, etc? Also, in Emma, Frank Churchill travels 16 miles on horseback to London ostensibly to get his hair cut (although he was actually buying the pianoforte for Jane Fairfax) - how long would this take? Would it be unusual for someone to go to London from this distance just for one such errand?
Thanks for any information, guesses, conjectures in advance!!
