Socially acceptable physical contact

I attended a piano four-hands concert/lecture last night. The pianists noted that since Mozart's time, when piano keyboards got wider, duets became popular, especially between young men and women who were interested in each other. They sat close together on the narrow piano bench, their hands crossed and touched and their legs met as they reached for the pedals. This would add a romantic element to stories! And it was all okay because they were creating music.
One gets the impression in Jane Austen's books, though, that playing the piano was a feminine pursuit. Perhaps the man would sing, and stand close by, but I don't recall any piano four-hands duets. Do any of you experts have any comments?
