In response to Jane Austen vs. her society, written by The Mysterious H.C. on April 18, 1998 at 09:38:42

To L and T indexThat letter...the one that she wrote about hoping that she might go and kill some birds....

According to Tomalin, it was written after the publication of Mary Shelley's outburst on the rights of women. Personally I think that it doesn't show her interest in feminism, but is an extension of her pathological tendencies more fully expressed in the Juvenalia

;-)

On a serious note, there's some talk of this topic in the archives. There's an enormous conversation that starts with Patrick's post "Was JA a Child of Enlightenment?" also, sundry comments by others (Carl Gross in particular) suggesting that some people find elements of social reforming zeal in JA's work.I'm not going to link them, they are too too many.

Anyone who wishes to sift through the Archives may do so by clicking on the link at the top of the board.
