To L and T indexThrough Lizzy it is apparent that Austen esteems women capable of being individuals in that society. However, it is less apparent, even after prolonged delving, whether Austen intends to provoke the females of her time to be more autonomous in the patriarchal society of Britain in the early 1800's. We notice her staunch admonition of immorality, yet there is a lack of straight-forwardness about women's proper role. Are there any suggestions? This has been bothering me for some time, as Austen was not foremost a feminist, but a feminine novelist...
