] There were constant rumours of French armies floating over on rafts, and even a rumour of submarines, and a tunnel under the channel.
One was started, and actually driven a mile before the work was abandoned, I seem to recall. . . . These projects, with their attendant frustrations are easier to understand when you remember that, on a clear day, Dover & Calais are actually within sight of each other across the Channel. So close, and yet so far, for the would-be conqueror.
