Posture and legs

I was watching Emma2 when I noticed that while watching Emma perform on the pianoforte, Jane Fairfax had her legs crossed and was swinging one leg. Isn't it improper to cross the legs?...Does this go for men, too?
Another thing that caught my eye was that Mr. Knightley sat down rather kicked back. He leaned back with his elbows onto a bench and pretty much took up the entire bench...he sat in the same slouch during tea after the archery scene. I know it is absolutely wrong for women to sit in such a way, but shouldn't men sit less leisurely?
