In response to Almack's & Costumes?, written by ElaineL on April 15, 1998 at 12:02:31
based on what I understand of Almacks and the ladies that that hosted the place, a masquerade was not likely to occur, being that the abiance was so strict. Masquerades were not uncommon elsewhere, however, though definately more common in the eighteenth century. And there was a place similar to Almack's that did have a masquerade or two but that place I believe close down before 1800. I'll see if I can find anything. But as far as Almack's, I've not heard of any masquerades taking place their for certain. I do know that the demireps (is that right?) had a years ball in the Argyle rooms and I think they sometimes had a masquerade. But you could not possibly compare the two, of course!
