I think that's the most sensible explanation, Peg.I suppose he could be on his way to a Military Academy, or some other such academic institution,but I find it hard to imagine he wouldn't have a schedule then.I have not read this story, so it's hard to be more specific, sorry.(Guess I shall just have to do some homework, no?)
