To L and T index ] Does anybody know what Mr. Bennett did all day? I don't remember a particular occupation other than gentleman. Money did not seem to be too tight although not enough for much of a dowry for the girls. Household staff seemed to be plentiful.

According to the book, Jane couldn't have the carriage to go to Netherfield because the horses were needed on the farm. That suggests that Mr Bennet, like Mr Austen, ran a 'home farm' which provided much of their food.
He seems to have spent a bit of time worrying about his investments, and his bills, too.Lydisa and her mother made sure of that!
