Mr. Bennett's occupation and Dashwood trust fund

Does anybody know what Mr. Bennett did all day? I don't remember a particular occupation other than gentleman. Money did not seem to be too tight although not enough for much of a dowry for the girls. Household staff seemed to be plentiful.
Also... regarding the Dashwood girls. Would their father have been able to set up trust funds for their future? Was this just not done or not legal? I thought it sad that the father had to beg his son/heir to promise to provide. And what about Mrs. Dashwood, the girls' mother? Could something have been set aside in the event of Mr. Dashwood's untimely death?
