Having an assortment of dogs sprawled over one's sofa, car and heaven knows what else is considered evidence of real Englishness in some quarters. I imagine it's eschewed by the noveau riche who want everything just so which makes it a indicator of being genuinely upper-class - or perhaps I read too many Laura Ashley home furnishing catalogues ;-)
