] ] On a personal note, as a lover of history for as long as I can remember, my first fascination was the Little House book collection. I wanted to be a pioneer girl and live in a log house until adolescence.
] Oh! Me, too!
I have always wanted Anne Shirley's world - I started reading L.M. Montgomery the same year as I started reading JA and I still can't pick up an Anne book without a very real pang of regret at being born in 1964. As for the Regency I'm very ashamed to say that although I live in Edinburgh with streets and streets of Georgian terraces, several well-preserved interiors including a whole working house and lovely assembly rooms I could never envisage JA's world comfortably until the recent dramatizations and although I think it very lovely I would still opt for being a woman academic in Kingsport (never a country doctor's wife!). I think the restrictions on women in JA's time were too much - imagine Oxford and Cambridge being accessible to Mr Collins and John Thorpe but closed to Elizabeth Bennet - too much to bear!
