marriage licenses

is an arcane idea in one sense and a new one in another. Marriages were consecrated in church and always by a priest. And after the marriage it would be duly recorded in the church catalog for registry. Perhaps the church then would give some formal paper recognizing the marriage but I doubt it. I think Mrs. Bennett's request for the special license might be a formal recognition by the ruling government body of the marriage. Now this could be the town, the governor or mayor - I don't know. In all likelihood it would be the silly woman's wish to "consecrate" the marriage not only in church but by the "state". Just an educated guess...
