Catharine (or The Bower)

I have been reading the above-mentioned selection from Juvenilia. In it, Edward Stanley, a young man, returns to England from France because his horse is ill (it dies). He is encouraged to return soon to France to complete his plans. (more specifically Lyons). Is he just on a Grand Tour or were there other reasons for young men to be in France? He didn't seem to care about a schedule & did not mention companions. Any ideas? Thanks!
