To L and T index The more I think about Wickham's flight, the more obvious it becomes that Darcy must have gone to quite considerable efforts to deal with the Wickham problem. He had to have the help of Colonel Forster (damage control in Brighton, and possibly in military circles), another Colonel in the Newcastle regiment (taking on a possible liablity) and of course, Mr Gardiner (co-ordinating all this and taking most of the Credit). This is quite apart from paying all outstanding bills, bribing Wickham to marry Lydia, buying him a commission in the Regulars and ensuring a small allowance is settled on Lydia herself, independant of her husband, in case she really finds herself up the creek again.
What a guy!
