After posting this question last night, I was at the library today looking at Regency period clothing books and came upon "The History of the Breast" by Marilyn Yalon a little further down the shelf (title a little strange, but actually a very cerebral approach). In one of the chapters the topic of breast-feeding during this period was covered and several quotes from a 1748 book, "Essay on Nursing," by Dr. William Cadogan, were included in wich the doctor used the term "nurse" as well as "suckle." So, I guess that answers my question! It is nice to read the words of someone from that period--a little earlier, but still to the point. =)
