Propriety might perhaps have required crossed ankles, but not crossed legs. My guess is that with long skirts this is much less of an error, than with 20th Century short skirts.

I just re-read what you said and I think you mis-understood me. I was saying that "crossed legs" was considered unlady-like, not un-crossed legs.
