I can't remember the source--too long ago--seems like maybe it was The Prospect Before Her, but not sure. Anyway, going from memory which is risky at best:
It was a kind of transitional time. Some mothers were still sending out the baby to a wet-nurse, some were hiring in the wet-nurse and others were choosing to nurse themselves (with society's generally growing approval). So I think you could choose to have it any way you want for the story.
Two other tidbits I remember: They thought the personality &/or moral bent of the woman doing the nursing was passed on to the child, so you didn't want some "loose" woman as your wet-nurse and whoever she was needed to watch her thought-life so as not to ruin the child's character. Also, it was believed immoral or maybe not that strong--just bad form--to have sex w/your wife if she was nursing. Which might explain the long-standing commitment to a wet-nurse :)
HOpe this helps. EL
