Just to give you an idea of the worth of the pound at the time:

Mr. Bennet considers what Wickham is willing to take Lydia for in P&P.

"He would scarcely be 10 pounds a year the loser, by the hundred that was to be paid to them; for what with her board and pocket allowance, and the continual presents in money, which passed to her, through her mothers hands, Lydia's expences had been very little within that sum."

Which by my calculations, means that it costs 110-150 pounds a year to keep Lydia fed, clothed, educated and housed for one year.

Also, Jane Eyre's salary for one year is 30 pounds + room and board.
