] ] What was common practice in regard to guardianship? I am curious about the significance of Darcy sharing the guardianship of Georgiana with Fitzwilliam.
] ] And why Fitzwilliam, rather than his older brother? Was it too insignificant a task for the future Lord? Or does it indicate that Fitzwilliam was more responsible? Or just that he was such great friends with Darcy?
] It was most likely a way to give Fitz a bit of income for his services as a guardian. Frequently an annunity was paid to the guardian.
I always thought it would have been because Darcy was so young. He would have been 23 by the time his father died, and quite young to be the guardian of an 11 year-old girl. Also, by that time he could still have been at Cambridge, and taking care of his sister alone would have been difficult. So there was Fitzwilliam to share the responsibility.
