Relative worth--money ?

I know this is probably in the archives, but my browser won't load it!
I'm wanting to get a feel for what sum might have been a tidy amount to lose gambling--not leaving someone destitute, but you better be wealthy to afford such a loss with equanimity. I know of a man who plays euchre for $1,000 a point and doesn't bat an eye--it's kind of along that line. Would a loss of 100 pounds have been hefty in
those times? If someone knows of a reference's address from within the archive, maybe I could get to it directly.
Thanks! EL
