Debt and Desertion

I found an interesting bit in Boswell's Life of Dr Johnson that says that it was more difficult to arrest a man for debt in Scotland than it was in Engliand. Apparently you had convince a judge that the circumstances warranted it. (Does that mean "Judge" as opposed to the English "magistrate" ?)
It set me thinking about Wickham......perhaps he intended to go to Scotland, after all, and changed his mind. However, that's not my question. Here it is...
Wickham was fleeing from his creditors, who would probably have him arrested for debt. But was he not also a deserter? As a Milita Officer, was there a set penalty for going AWOL?
