An Equestrian Question

Would any fellow equestrians on list happen to know whether ladies in JA's time would have ridden sidesaddle or astride? It would seem to me that with all of their finery, they would be limited to carriage driving, but riding appears to be an acceptable activity for a lady in "Mansfield Park".
