To L and T indexWhen Parliament rewarded someone they usually dished out a large lump sum of money, and the rewardee then chose his own bit of land.I give you the corny old example of the Duke of Wellington...given a tilte and money, he purchased both Stratfield Saye, his country seat, and Apsley House, his London residence (though, not at he same time, I must add.) That litle gem probably got into my head by way of Elizabeth Longford's Wellington: The Years of the Sword .
