Men, women and JA

Is there a difference between the way men and women like JA?
This is a raging overgeneralisation, but I think we usually identify with the same-sex main character, and fancy the opposite-sex one.
So women often identify with Emma, Lizzy, etc., and judge Messrs Knightley, Darcy etc. according to whether we could fancy them. Men do it the other way round.
A test: Fanny Price. It is much more difficult for women to identify with her than it is for men to fancy her. Do women object to her more than men?
