In response to Two wives;-), written by Caroline on March 20, 1998 at 16:30:56] last verse of "The Gentleman Soldier"
]] "Oh, Soldier, dearest Soldier, won't you marry me?"
] "Oh, no, my dearest Polly, that can never be!
] For I've a wife already, and children I have three.
] Two wives are allowed in the Army, but one's too many for me!"
I heard a report about the song Pretty Polly on NPR's All Things Considered last summer. Apparently the song is based on the actual murder of a young woman in the late 18th century, the song immigrated to America with in a year of the incident but the versions are very different now. I think in the original case the man was a sailor though.
