I know that Elizabeth Bennet and all the other Bennet girls had nicknames, and I've seen in the P&P sequels that Darcy had the nickname of Fitz. Is this accurate? or would he have been called something else?
Also, does the (I guess) prefix of Fitz in a first name or any name for that matter have a meaning like 'descended from' or 'of the lineage of' or something like that? I've seen the first name of Fitzwilliam in many period novels, and now I only see last names with Fitz like Fitzpatrick or Fitzsimmons...
Hope one of you or many of you can answer this for me! This curiosity has been driving me crazy this morning!
