In response to The Evangelicals... again!, written by Caroline on March 21, 1998 at 20:09:48
] I am currently seeking more information about the evangelical movement during the Regency period. Please give info or post links. Thanks I lok forward t reading more.
I just returned to the library the book titled, "Our Tempestuous Days" As I recall, it had several references to some of the efforts and effects of the evangelical movement. Also, I think one of leading persons in the movement was Hannah More (spelling might have been Moore--can't remember). I would guess an encyclopedia might have something on her since she seemed to be well-published. I'll look in my church history books, too and see if I can find anything for you.One differentiation I remember reading was that while the Wesley brothers appealed to the lower classes, the evangelicals tried to stay within the good graces of the upper class and yet also change their perspective on religion and how it ought to determine the kind of person one was.
Hope this helps. EL
